How to Use These Resources for Spiritual Development:
Don't refuse to start merely because you "do not have time." Whether you deeply engage or lightly touch upon these resources is more than a matter of time than anything else.
Reading some of the text lightly, but repetitively, produces results. On the first day, read, noting what "speaks to you." Next day, read again, especially that which resonates for you. Read quickly! Pray! Move on! Wonder: "What is this text saying?" if you have time.
If you pursue a more extensive exploration, take time to quiet down, perhaps using a breathing exercise.
The first day, see if any part speaks to you. The second day, prepare yourself and reread the materials, again noting what speaks to you: Who are the main characters of the text? If it is a gospel story, how are they interacting with Jesus? On Saturday, prepare and reread the texts, focusing especially upon what speaks to you. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday following the service, continue reading the passages, looking especially for meanings which link together in subtle ways that go unnoticed in caual readings.
You may also use a prepared study guide such as "Guidepost," or "Plus," or "Upper Room" in conjunction with this approach. The convergence of the subject matter of Bible readings, hymns, and devotional guides is especially evident during Holiday times. The experience of convergence may be a pleasant surprise at a time when you are spiritually prepared for it!
